Dr. W. Stephen Pannill ’02, Cecil College President, was selected as one of Maryland’s “25 CEOs You Need to Know” by The Gazette of Politics and Business. Pannill was picked from a group of 130 leaders nominated by economic development offices around the state. He was recently named Executive of the Year by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce.  The article noted Cecil's enrollment growth since Pannill became Cecil's fourth president July 1, 2000. As president, he also is secretary and treasurer of the board of trustees and on the board of the Cecil College Foundation. He is on the advisory board for the Cecil Leadership Institute and an adviser to the Bainbridge Development Corporation. Pannill was recently elected chair of the Maryland Community College Presidents Group after serving as its vice chair.

Barstow Acres Children's Center is located in Prince Frederick, Maryland and provides mental health services to children and families.

 


Paul W. Comfort, ’07 was re-elected as President of Maryland County Administrators Association. Paul, the Charles County Administrator, has been re-elected by his peers, to an unprecedented fifth consecutive term as President of the Maryland Administrative Officers Association. This Association is an affiliate Organization of the Maryland of Counties (MACO) and its members include Maryland’s County Administrators, County Managers and Chief Administrative Officers.

J.C. Weiss ’08, Co-founder and Chairman of the nonprofit Biotechnical Institute of Maryland, announced that his organization which trains unemployed and underemployed workers for entry-level technician jobs at bio-pharmaceutical companies, has been given a four-year, $1 million grant from the Charles T. Bauer Foundation. The institute has placed more than 200 graduates in life sciences organizations and companies throughout the Baltimore area, including the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland Baltimore, Osiris Therapeutics and Human Genome Sciences. It plans to use the grant to upgrade laboratory equipment and facilities, and will issue annual reports showing progress and challenges. The institute is supported by grants from the Abell Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Open Society Institute, the Goldseker Foundation and a 2007 work force training award from Baltimore City. The foundation was established by Bauer, an educational benefactor and co-founder of mutual fund company AIM Management Group.



Dr. Michael J. Martino ’07,
Superintendent of the St. Mary’s County Public Schools was named Maryland’s Superintendent of the Year.
Mike, a resident of Leonardtown, has been Superintendent of Schools for St. Mary’s County Public Schools since 2005. Previously, he held positions in the school systems of Howard, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. Mike earned his B.S. in science education, an M.Ed. in counseling and personnel services, and an M.Ed. in education planning, development and administration from the University of Maryland College Park. He went on to earn his Ed.D. in school management and institutional leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He is the recipient of numerous education-related awards.  Mike is active in his community as evidenced by his involvement with the Public School Superintendent’s Association of Maryland, Washington Area School Study Council, St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce, Business, Education and Community Alliance, and the American Association of School Administrators
